Beautiful Me

Mothers Day Special

Especially for people looking for a perfect mothers day gift

Being away from my mother and my mother-in-law (who has loved me like a daughter) makes me realize how much I love them and makes me wish I had done more for them when I was with them in Pakistan. Well to be fair I didn’t get much time with my mother-in-law after my wedding since we moved to New Zealand two months after we got married. But during the time I was there with her we did manage to bond quite well and developed a lovely mother-daughter relationship. I am quite proud about the fact that she never treated me like her “Bahu” (daughter-in-law) and obviously I reciprocated her feeling.

Coming back to the topic…I was talking about how I wish I had done more for them. Sure I speak to them from here, check how they are doing, pray for them and tell them that I love them but I feel it’s not enough. How I wish I could be there to take care of them. I guess, there’s not much that I can do about that. Pakistan is pretty far from here and I could only hope to see them once a year or two.

Years back I couldn’t understand what Mothers Day and Fathers Day were for…I mean you don’t need days to express your love and gratitude to your mother and father. But I guess they have these days for people like me, who are thousands of miles away. A special day when we could surprise our loved ones with a little present. Sure being a mother myself I understand that monetary things have no meaning compared to having your kids by your side but at least one day of the year we have a reason to make them feel extra special. At least this day, kids who have become over engrossed in their lives and have forgotten their parents (not me 😛 ) can do something special for their parents. Be it a simple hug if you are near them, a little hand-made card by a school going kid, a family dinner or a little present…it doesn’t have to be something expensive…they love you so much that any effort from your part will be appreciated and met with a happy smile and sometimes tears of joy (this is so true for my emotional mother).

Well Mothers Day is soon coming up and I thought of doing this feature to give people like me – who have mothers and mother-in-law in Pakistan and are looking for the perfect easy to order gift for them. Last year I had ordered lawn suits for my both my mother and mother-in-law…perhaps because it’s quite easy to order online, they deliver at doorstep and you’ve got a lot of variety to choose from. But this year I wanted to do something different as branded lawn suits are available all year round and every lady in Pakistan buys tonnes of them each year! A friend of mine had told me about this online branded cosmetics store Kosmos and I decided to give it a shot!

At first I was quite worried about dealing with an online store given the fact that there are so many fake and replicas floating around but my friend ensured me that the products were genuine and imported from well-known suppliers. Since my friend had had a positive experience and was confident about this I decided to give it a go. I must admit that I was quite surprised by the range this store had to offer…sure branded cosmetics and perfumes were easily available at retail chains like Naheed, Chase Up etc but I hadn’t heard of an online store in Pakistan offering genuine cosmetics and perfumes. (Full range can be viewed here)

Well this solved my problem…my mother isn’t too knowledgeable about cosmetics and mainly relies on me for her cosmetics shopping. Well mostly I used to get my brother to buy those from Canada (as he was studying there)…not sure why but I’ve always had trust issues with duplicate cosmetics being sold in Pakistan so just to be on the safe side that I didn’t end up buying fakes, I used to get him to bring them from Canada. This is precisely the reason why my friend had a really hard time convincing me this place was genuine…it took a few days of convincing from my friend’s end and some research into the company that finally convinced me. And I am quite happy that I decided to order!

My order was nicely gift wrapped with a message that I had requested.

The delivery fee was quite reasonable (Rs 250) and the order was shipped within 4 days. I got my mother to check the packaging for any breakages and the expiry date, since my friend had told me that the company willing took returns in case of any such issues. My mum was quite happy and surprised as well because she wasn’t expecting cosmetics of all things plus her since my brother has been in Pakistan for quite a few months now her cosmetics were running out. Quite glad I came to know about to know about this store. Word to the wise: If you have a mother in Pakistan and are looking for a perfect, efficient gift for her then head over to Kosmos, I am pretty sure you’ll find something she loves 🙂 Oh and hopefully if you are not too late…they have a Mothers Day sale going on – 15% off site wide. You can visit the website here and the promo code for the discount is newbie.

Now I am off to figuring out a gift for my mother-in-law now since she’s not much of a cosmetics fan.

  1. Again a good one hina… being away from my families makes me realize ive done nothing for them i miss the comfort, i really miss my father doing ‘dum’ on me while i was asleep after he offers his tahajjud prayers, i miss irritating my mother just to get a bit of spanks from her, i miss my father in laws jokes and my mum in laws stories…. ur article made me emotional

  2. Such a beautiful article Hina, it was like you have used all the words that we all feel who are far from their families 👍

  3. Awww, that’s really sweet that you think so fondly of your mother in law. Alhamdulillah, my mother in law is really nice. Not the typical one we grew up hearing about. Hehe! This is my first year away from my mommy and so I agree with you, mother’s day means something more now. The gift is not so much about getting something your mom wants but a symbolic gesture from her child that despite the routine of everyday, she has not been forgotten and is appreciated for everything she has done and still does for her children!

    1. Exactly! Like I mentioned it doesn’t have to be something material. Even a little hug would make our mums happy

  4. How thoughtful you are! Your love shimmers all the time between the lines. I am not so into mothers day, my mum also not. When I find something she might like, I always buy it and send it by post. What I definitly don’t like is sending flowers. Gone after a few days.

    1. Yes you are right Rabia. I wasnt into mothers day when I was back home with her. But now that I am so far, this day has become quite special

  5. How Lovely, glad you mum liked her gift. It is the little bit of extra we do that can bring some joy to them in their old age. this post about Mother’s Day reminds me of my mum (1st mothers day without her this year:-( ), and she would always say “Everyday is Mothers Day” . We should love and treasure our mums, life is too short.

  6. Wow so beautiful..It is a great gift for Mother’s Day..I think Mother’s Day gifts shows little bit of our love and affection to mothers…Share some more ideas or link if you already have shared….

  7. What a sweet and thoughful gesture mA. And the gift is beautiful. Your mother must miss you terribly! I moved away almost 14 years ago, and it doesn’t get any easier :-(.May Allah bless us to be there and make duaa for our parents just like they did for us as we were growing up.

  8. Hey hina.. Nice thoughts MashaAllah … you have a way with words. And great gifts 🙂
    Thanks for sharing this.

  9. I love this article but what I love the most is how you mentioned your mother in law along side your mother every time in the article . Not differentiating between the two even though no one can replace your mother you should love and respect your mother in law just like your own mother .
Plus lovely efforts you made to make you mums day ! May Allah accept this from you but again as you said you could do this any other day and not just a specific day. I am not married nor am i away from my mom i still love to surprise her with gifts to make her feel special without caring what day it was
